About This Trail

The Riverside Park Short Loop is a peaceful and family-friendly trail located within the historic Aldermere townsite on the unceded territories of the Wet’suwet’en Nation. This easy loop offers a relaxing walk through beautiful natural surroundings, making it an excellent choice for visitors looking to enjoy the outdoors at a comfortable pace.

Beginning from Hankin Avenue, the trail follows a gentle route through riverside forest and open green spaces. While much of the path is well-defined and easy to follow, some sections feature overgrown vegetation and exposed tree roots, so sturdy footwear is recommended for added comfort and stability.

For those wishing to extend their outing, the trail can be continued north toward Tyhee Provincial Park and the scenic shores of Tyhee Lake, where visitors can relax by the water, enjoy a picnic, or take in the surrounding mountain views.

Ideal for beginners, families, and anyone new to hiking, Riverside Park Short Loop provides a welcoming introduction to the area's natural beauty. Along the way, hikers may encounter seasonal wildflowers, native birds, and other local wildlife, making it a rewarding destination for nature lovers, photographers, and those simply seeking a peaceful escape outdoors.

Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, head east on Highway 16 for approximately 15km to the Village of Telkwa. Follow signs toward Riverside Park — the park is located along the Bulkley River just off the highway. If not camping, park at the public parking area before descending the hill into the campground. For the easiest trail access, walk down from the parking area through the campground to the back right corner near the river where the loop trail begins. For a slightly longer approach, take the path up and to the left from the public parking area.

Parking

Free public parking is available at Riverside Park above the campground. Do not drive into the campground unless you are a registered camper. The parking area is the recommended starting point for day visitors accessing the trail. No fees for trail use; campground fees apply if staying overnight.

Safety & Preparation

Stay on marked trails and keep a safe distance from the Bulkley River bank — water levels can be high and currents strong, especially during spring and early summer snowmelt. Bears (black bear and grizzly) are present in the Bulkley Valley corridor; make noise on the trail, keep dogs on leash, and carry bear spray. Some sections of the trail may have exposed roots or uneven ground — sturdy footwear is recommended. The trail connects to the wider Telkwa trail network, so first-time visitors should take note of their entry point to avoid getting turned around.
