Getting There

Directions

The Cottonwood Trail is located near the Village of Telkwa, approximately 15km east of Smithers on Yellowhead Highway 16. From Smithers, drive east on Highway 16 into Telkwa. The trail is accessible from the Telkwa townsite trail network — a good starting point is Eddy Park at the Bulkley River (off Highway 16 in the village centre) or from the Telkwa Museum at 1620 Highway 16. Consult the Telkwa Visitor Guide trail map (available at telkwa.ca or the Village office at 1415 Hankin Avenue) for the exact trailhead access point from the network.

Parking

Park at Eddy Park off Highway 16 in Telkwa — free, open access with a riverside gazebo and picnic area. Alternatively, street parking is available near the Telkwa Museum at 1620 Highway 16. No fees or permits required. The Village office at 1415 Hankin Avenue can provide current trail maps if needed.

Safety & Preparation

The cottonwood forest along the Bulkley River corridor is active bear habitat — both black bears and grizzlies frequent the riverside stands, particularly during salmon runs in late summer and fall. Carry bear spray, make noise while walking, and be alert at all times. Keep dogs on leash and under control. River banks can be unstable and water levels can rise quickly during spring snowmelt — keep a safe distance from the Bulkley River's edge. Some sections may be muddy or waterlogged after rain.
