About This Trail

A pleasant walking trail that begins at the Telkwa Museum (housed in Telkwa's original 1920 school building at 1620 Highway 16) and winds through the historic townsite and surrounding river landscape. The trail forms part of Telkwa's extensive walking trail network, which follows ecosystems ranging from riverside flats and cottonwood forest to marsh and aspen woodland. Many of Telkwa's trails trace old telegraph lines, wagon roads, and pioneer routes used in the early 20th century, giving this walk a strong sense of local history. Suitable for all ages and abilities. Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en people.

Getting There

Directions

The trail starts at the Telkwa Museum, located at 1620 Highway 16 in the Village of Telkwa, approximately 15km east of Smithers along Yellowhead Highway 16. From Smithers, drive east on Highway 16 for about 15 minutes — the museum is on the south side of the highway in the heart of the village, housed in the historic 1920 school building. From Houston, drive west on Highway 16 for approximately 49km. Street parking is available directly in front of the museum.

Parking

Free street parking is available along Highway 16 in front of the Telkwa Museum. Additional parking can be found at nearby Eddy Park, just off the highway at the Bulkley River, which serves as an alternate access point to the broader Telkwa trail network. No fees or permits required.

Safety & Preparation

Telkwa's trail network borders the Bulkley River — stay on marked paths and keep children and dogs away from river banks, particularly during high water in spring and early summer. Bears (black bear and grizzly) are present throughout the Bulkley Valley; be "Bear Smart," make noise on the trail, and carry bear spray. Some trail sections may be overgrown or muddy in summer. The Village of Telkwa advises all trail users to watch ahead for bears and bear signs.
