About This Trail

Piper Cross is a scenic forest singletrack that serves as an important connector within the Ptarmigan trail network, linking several popular mountain biking routes into longer and more varied rides. While not a destination trail on its own, it plays a key role in creating seamless transitions between climbing routes and downhill descents.

The trail winds through mature forest on natural singletrack, featuring gentle rolling terrain, compact dirt surfaces, exposed roots, and a handful of small technical features that keep the ride engaging without being overly demanding. Its smooth flow and moderate difficulty make it suitable for riders of a wide range of skill levels, particularly those exploring the network for the first time.

Piper Cross is commonly used to connect with nearby trails, allowing riders to build custom loop rides or link together longer descents throughout the Ptarmigan trail system. The shaded forest setting provides a peaceful atmosphere, while changing trail conditions throughout the season—including loose soil, roots, and occasional muddy sections after rainfall—add variety to the experience.

Whether you're extending your ride, accessing other trails, or simply enjoying a quiet stretch of flowing singletrack, Piper Cross offers a pleasant and versatile connection through one of the Smithers area's most popular mountain biking networks.

Getting There

Directions

From downtown Smithers, head west on Highway 16 and continue uphill on Hudson Bay Mountain Road. Turn onto Ptarmigan Road and follow the gravel access road toward the Ptarmigan Recreation trail network. Piper Cross is typically accessed through connecting trails rather than a dedicated standalone trailhead.

Parking

Parking is available at gravel pullouts and informal trail access parking areas along Ptarmigan Road. Riders commonly use these areas to access multiple Ptarmigan trails and connector routes.

Safety & Preparation

Piper Cross includes natural trail surfaces with roots, loose dirt, and occasional uneven terrain. Riders should be cautious during wet conditions, as sections may become slippery. Standard mountain biking safety precautions apply, including proper gear, awareness of wildlife, and preparation for limited cell service.
