About This Trail

Piper Down – Lower features flowing singletrack, bermed turns, rolling descents, and natural obstacles through forested terrain. As the continuation of the upper section, it provides a smoother transition toward lower elevations while still maintaining engaging downhill elements suitable for intermediate to advanced riders.

Getting There

Directions

From downtown Smithers, drive west on Highway 16 and continue uphill via Hudson Bay Mountain Road. Turn onto Ptarmigan Road and follow the gravel forestry road into the Ptarmigan Recreation trail network. Access to Piper Down – Lower is usually through connected trail routes from upper sections or nearby access points.

Parking

Parking is available at gravel pullouts and informal parking areas along Ptarmigan Road and nearby trail access locations. Riders may access the lower section through shuttle routes or by connecting from upper Ptarmigan trails.

Safety & Preparation

Piper Down – Lower includes loose dirt, roots, rocks, bermed corners, and downhill sections that may become slippery in wet conditions. Riders should wear proper protective gear, check trail conditions before riding, and stay aware of limited cell service and wildlife activity in the area.
