About This Trail

Piper Down – Upper is a fun and challenging downhill singletrack that forms part of the Ptarmigan trail network near Smithers. The trail features flowing descents, bermed corners, natural dirt surfaces, and moderate technical features, creating an exciting ride through scenic forest terrain.


As the upper section of the Piper Down trail, it serves as a key connection to lower trails within the network, making it a popular choice for riders building longer downhill routes. Ideal for intermediate to advanced mountain bikers, it offers a rewarding mix of speed, flow, and technical riding.

Getting There

Directions

From downtown Smithers, head west on Highway 16 and continue uphill on Hudson Bay Mountain Road. Turn onto Ptarmigan Road and follow the gravel forestry access road toward the upper Ptarmigan trail network, where Piper Down – Upper can be accessed via connecting trail entrances or shuttle drop-off points.

Parking

Parking is available at gravel pullouts and informal parking areas along Ptarmigan Road near upper trail access locations. Many riders use these spots for shuttle staging or direct access to upper downhill trails.

Safety & Preparation

Piper Down – Upper may include steep sections, roots, rocks, loose terrain, and technical downhill features. Riders should wear appropriate protective gear and assess trail conditions before riding, especially after rain. Be prepared for rough road access, limited cell reception, and possible wildlife encounters in the area.
