Getting There

Directions

To ride Broken Axe Loop, travel from Smithers toward The Bluff recreation area via Highway 16 and follow access roads into the Hudson Bay Mountain trail system. Park at the main Bluff parking area. From there, ride up Bluff Road or connecting climb trails into the upper network, then follow signage or junctions leading to Broken Axe. The descent brings you back down into the lower Bluff trail system, completing the loop.

Parking

Parking is available at the main Bluff recreation area parking lot near the base of the trail system. Additional roadside pullouts may be available, but vehicles must not block gates, logging roads, or emergency access routes. Parking can be limited during peak riding times and weekends.

Safety & Preparation

This loop includes both sustained climbing and a steep, technical descent. Riders should be prepared for physical exertion on the climb and advanced trail conditions on the descent, including roots, rocks, and tight corners. The downhill section can become very slippery when wet. Riders should maintain awareness of changing trail conditions and other users. Helmets are strongly recommended, and protective gear is advised for the descent. This route is best suited for experienced riders.
