About This Trail

Uptrack is the main designated climbing trail on The Bluff in Smithers, BC. It is designed specifically for uphill travel, providing a steady and more manageable route to access the upper trail network. The trail features a mix of smooth dirt, gradual switchbacks, and occasional rooty or rocky sections, making it a consistent and efficient climb compared to steeper access routes.

Getting There

Directions

To reach Uptrack, travel from Smithers toward The Bluff recreation area via Highway 16 and follow access roads into the Hudson Bay Mountain trail system. Park at the main Bluff recreation area. From there, Uptrack can be accessed directly from the lower trail network and is clearly used as the primary uphill route leading into the mid and upper Bluff trails.

Parking

Parking is available at the main Bluff recreation area parking lot at the base of the trail system. Additional roadside pullouts may be available, but vehicles must not block gates, logging roads, or emergency access routes. Parking can be limited during weekends and peak riding season.

Safety & Preparation

Uptrack is intended primarily for climbing, so riders should expect uphill traffic and avoid descending on this trail unless clearly permitted. The trail includes sustained effort with occasional technical sections such as roots and loose dirt, which can reduce traction, especially in wet conditions. Riders should maintain control, manage fatigue, and stay alert for other users. Helmets are recommended.
