About This Trail

Broken Axe is a classic advanced downhill mountain bike trail on The Bluff in Smithers, BC. It is known for its steep, sustained descent through tight forest singletrack with roots, rocks, and natural technical features. The trail demands good braking control and strong bike handling skills, and it is considered one of the more challenging “old-school BC” style lines in the Bluff network.

Getting There

Directions

To reach Broken Axe, travel from Smithers toward The Bluff recreation area via Highway 16 and follow access roads into the Hudson Bay Mountain trail network. From the main Bluff parking area, ride up Bluff Road or connecting climb trails into the upper network. Broken Axe is accessed from the upper Bluff trail system and is typically reached via junctions shared with other advanced trails such as Shining and Back in Black.

Parking

Parking is available at the main Bluff recreation area parking lot at the base of the trail system. Additional small pullouts may exist along access roads, but drivers must avoid blocking gates or logging operations. Parking may be limited during weekends and peak riding season.

Safety & Preparation

Broken Axe is a highly technical downhill trail with steep gradients, loose rock, roots, and tight switchback-style corners. The trail can be fast in sections but requires constant control due to sudden changes in terrain. Wet conditions significantly increase difficulty, making roots and rocks slippery. Riders should be prepared for limited sightlines and natural hazards. A helmet is required, and full protective gear is strongly recommended. This trail is not suitable for beginners.
