Ashman Ridge West

Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, head west on Highway 16 and turn onto McDonnell Lake Road. Follow this gravel Forest Service Road (FSR) for approximately 48 km. Keep a close watch on the kilometer markers, as the trailhead is a discreet "wilderness" entrance located in a small pull-out on the left-hand side of the road.

The trail begins with an immediate and relentless climb through a dense subalpine forest. There is no gradual warm-up; the path follows a steep, root-heavy fall line that gains elevation rapidly. After roughly 2 km of trekking, the forest thins out, and you will break onto the rocky spine of the ridge. Once on the crest, the trail levels out slightly, allowing you to walk along the "spine" for several kilometers to take in the panoramic views of the Coast Mountains and the Zymoetz River valley. The total distance for a return trip to the first major viewpoint is approximately 4 km.

Parking

Parking for Ashman Ridge West is informal and requires careful attention to your surroundings, as there is no paved or designated "lot" like you would find at a provincial park.

  • Location: Access is via the McDonnell Lake Forest Service Road (FSR). As you approach the 48 km mark, look for a brushed-in spur road heading uphill on your right (roughly 54° 49' 19" N, 127° 52' 39" W).
  • The Pull-out: Most hikers park on the shoulder of the mainline (the FSR itself) or in the small pull-out area at the entrance of the spur road.
  • Industrial Etiquette: This is an active logging and resource road. Ensure your vehicle is parked completely off the traveled surface of the road. Never block access to the spur road or any nearby gates, as heavy machinery needs ample room to maneuver.
  • Accessing the Trailhead: From your vehicle, walk up the brushed-in spur road almost to its end. The signed trailhead for Ashman West will be located on your right.

[!NOTE] During winter months, this section of the road is often unmaintained unless logging is active. If the road is plowed, do not park in a way that obstructs snowplows or residents who maintain the road privately. If you are parking overnight, it is recommended to leave a visible note on your dashboard with your return date and contact information.

Safety & Preparation

Ashman Ridge West is a demanding backcountry route intended for experienced hikers. The trail gains over 550 metres of elevation in a very short distance, making it physically taxing and potentially hazardous in wet conditions when roots and moss become slippery.

As a remote wilderness trail, it is not regularly maintained or marked. Blowdown (fallen trees) is common, and the path can be difficult to discern in the upper meadows; carrying a GPS-enabled map or satellite communication device is essential.

  • Wildlife: This is active grizzly bear and mountain goat habitat. Always carry bear spray in an accessible holster and travel in groups.
  • Weather: The ridge is highly exposed to wind and lightning. Weather can shift from clear skies to a mountain storm in minutes—pack high-quality layers even on warm days.
  • Water: There are no reliable water sources along the trail or on the ridge crest. Carry at least 2–3 litres of water per person.
  • Road Access: The McDonnell Lake FSR is a multi-use industrial road. Be prepared to yield to heavy logging trucks and ensure your vehicle has a full tank of gas and a spare tire, as cell service is non-existent once you leave the highway.
