About This Trail

Eagle Pass Trail is a scenic backcountry route within Babine Mountains Provincial Park, offering a rewarding climb through dense forest into breathtaking subalpine terrain. As the trail steadily gains elevation, the landscape gradually opens from shaded woodland to expansive mountain scenery, providing increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and alpine wilderness.

This moderately challenging trail is ideal for hikers who enjoy sustained climbs and the rewards of remote mountain travel. Branching off from the Little Joe Creek Trail, the route leads into the picturesque Higgins Basin and may provide access to nearby alpine ridgelines for those continuing deeper into the backcountry. Along the way, hikers can experience the quiet beauty of untouched wilderness, making it an excellent destination for those seeking solitude and scenic viewpoints. Please note that mountain biking is not permitted on this trail.

As part of the BC Parks system, Eagle Pass Trail is located within Babine Mountains Provincial Park, one of British Columbia's premier protected wilderness areas, renowned for its rugged alpine landscapes, pristine forests, and abundant wildlife. Visitors should come prepared with appropriate backcountry gear, navigation equipment, and sufficient food and water, as weather and trail conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

Before your visit, be sure to check the latest trail conditions, closures, wildlife advisories, and conservation updates through the official BC Parks website to help ensure a safe and enjoyable backcountry adventure.

Getting There

Directions

The Eagle Pass Trail is located within Babine Mountains Provincial Park near Smithers, BC. From downtown Smithers, drive east on Highway 16, cross the Bulkley River Bridge, and turn left onto Old Babine Lake Road. Continue north following signs toward Babine Mountains Provincial Park and Driftwood Canyon. Follow the access road toward the park’s interior trail network, where the Eagle Pass Trailhead branches off from established routes within the park, often accessed via connecting trails such as the Silver King Basin area.

Parking

Parking is available at the Babine Mountains Provincial Park access area, typically at designated gravel lots used for multiple trailheads in the park. These parking areas are suitable for standard vehicles in dry conditions, but road access may become rough or muddy depending on weather, making high-clearance vehicles a better option. There are no on-site services or facilities, so hikers should ensure they are fully prepared before leaving Smithers.

Safety & Preparation

Eagle Pass Trail is a remote backcountry route with limited signage, variable trail conditions, and little to no cell service. The area is known for wildlife activity, including black bears and grizzly bears, so carrying bear spray, making noise, and practicing proper food storage are essential. Hikers should be prepared for steep and uneven terrain, alpine conditions, and rapidly changing weather, including cold temperatures, fog, and sudden rain. Trail hazards may include loose rocks, fallen trees, muddy sections, and exposed areas at higher elevations. It is strongly recommended to hike with a partner, inform someone of your travel plans, bring navigation tools such as a map or GPS, and carry sufficient food, water, and extra layers to ensure a safe trip.
