About This Lake

Barrett Lake is a small freshwater fishing lake located approximately 15 km northwest of Houston, British Columbia. The lake is stocked with Rainbow Trout and offers a quiet setting for shore fishing and fishing from small watercraft. A basic boat launch provides lake access, although the road can be rough and may require a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle. Its peaceful surroundings and proximity to Houston make it a suitable destination for a short fishing trip.

Fishing Regulations

A valid BC freshwater fishing licence is required. Check current regulations at the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis before your visit.

Getting There

Directions

From Houston, travel west on Highway 16 toward Smithers and follow the appropriate local access road toward Barrett Lake. Continue on the gravel road to the lake and boat-launch area. The final road section may be rough, muddy, and deeply rutted, particularly during spring breakup or after prolonged rain. Confirm current road conditions before travelling and use a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle when necessary.

Parking

Limited informal parking is available near the basic boat launch. There is no large developed parking area, so visitors should park carefully without blocking the launch, access road, or turnaround space. Larger trailers may have difficulty because of the rough road and limited maneuvering room.

Safety & Preparation

The access road may become muddy, slippery, deeply rutted, or impassable during spring breakup and after heavy rain. A high-clearance 4Γ—4 vehicle is recommended, and road conditions should be checked before departure. The lake has limited facilities and may have unreliable cellular coverage, so visitors should carry drinking water, emergency supplies, weather-appropriate clothing, and navigation tools. Anyone using a boat, canoe, kayak, or float tube should wear an approved personal flotation device. Anglers must carry a valid BC freshwater fishing licence and review the current Region 6 fishing regulations before fishing.
